Computational simulation for concurrent engineering of aerospace propulsion systems
Results are summarized for an investigation to assess the infrastructure available and the technology readiness in order to develop computational simulation methods/software for concurrent engineering. These results demonstrate that development of computational simulation methods for concurrent engineering is timely. Extensive infrastructure, in terms of multi-discipline simulation, component-specific simulation, system simulators, fabrication process simulation, and simulation of uncertainties--fundamental to develop such methods, is available. An approach is recommended which can be used to develop computational simulation methods for concurrent engineering of propulsion systems and systems in general. Benefits and issues needing early attention in the development are outlined
Multidisciplinary tailoring of hot composite structures
A computational simulation procedure is described for multidisciplinary analysis and tailoring of layered multi-material hot composite engine structural components subjected to simultaneous multiple discipline-specific thermal, structural, vibration, and acoustic loads. The effect of aggressive environments is also simulated. The simulation is based on a three-dimensional finite element analysis technique in conjunction with structural mechanics codes, thermal/acoustic analysis methods, and tailoring procedures. The integrated multidisciplinary simulation procedure is general-purpose including the coupled effects of nonlinearities in structure geometry, material, loading, and environmental complexities. The composite material behavior is assessed at all composite scales, i.e., laminate/ply/constituents (fiber/matrix), via a nonlinear material characterization hygro-thermo-mechanical model. Sample tailoring cases exhibiting nonlinear material/loading/environmental behavior of aircraft engine fan blades, are presented. The various multidisciplinary loads lead to different tailored designs, even those competing with each other, as in the case of minimum material cost versus minimum structure weight and in the case of minimum vibration frequency versus minimum acoustic noise

A computational simulation procedure is described for the coupled response of multi-layered multi-material composite engine structural components which are subjected to simultaneous multi-disciplinary thermal, structural, vibration, and acoustic loadings including the effect of hostile environments. The simulation is based on a three dimensional finite element analysis technique in conjunction with structural mechanics codes and with acoustic analysis methods. The composite material behavior is assessed at the various composite scales, i.e., the laminate/ply/constituents (fiber/matrix), via a nonlinear material characterization model. Sample cases exhibiting nonlinear geometrical, material, loading, and environmental behavior of aircraft engine fan blades, are presented. Results for deformed shape, vibration frequency, mode shapes, and acoustic noise emitted from the fan blade, are discussed for their coupled effect in hot and humid environments. Results such as acoustic noise for coupled composite-mechanics/heat transfer/structural/vibration/acoustic analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of coupled multi-disciplinary computational simulation and the various advantages of composite materials compared to metals
High Temperature Composite Analyzer (HITCAN) demonstration manual, version 1.0
This manual comprises a variety of demonstration cases for the HITCAN (HIgh Temperature Composite ANalyzer) code. HITCAN is a general purpose computer program for predicting nonlinear global structural and local stress-strain response of arbitrarily oriented, multilayered high temperature metal matrix composite structures. HITCAN is written in FORTRAN 77 computer language and has been configured and executed on the NASA Lewis Research Center CRAY XMP and YMP computers. Detailed description of all program variables and terms used in this manual may be found in the User's Manual. The demonstration includes various cases to illustrate the features and analysis capabilities of the HITCAN computer code. These cases include: (1) static analysis, (2) nonlinear quasi-static (incremental) analysis, (3) modal analysis, (4) buckling analysis, (5) fiber degradation effects, (6) fabrication-induced stresses for a variety of structures; namely, beam, plate, ring, shell, and built-up structures. A brief discussion of each demonstration case with the associated input data file is provided. Sample results taken from the actual computer output are also included
Coupled multi-disciplinary composites behavior simulation
The capabilities of the computer code CSTEM (Coupled Structural/Thermal/Electro-Magnetic Analysis) are discussed and demonstrated. CSTEM computationally simulates the coupled response of layered multi-material composite structures subjected to simultaneous thermal, structural, vibration, acoustic, and electromagnetic loads and includes the effect of aggressive environments. The composite material behavior and structural response is determined at its various inherent scales: constituents (fiber/matrix), ply, laminate, and structural component. The thermal and mechanical properties of the constituents are considered to be nonlinearly dependent on various parameters such as temperature and moisture. The acoustic and electromagnetic properties also include dependence on vibration and electromagnetic wave frequencies, respectively. The simulation is based on a three dimensional finite element analysis in conjunction with composite mechanics and with structural tailoring codes, and with acoustic and electromagnetic analysis methods. An aircraft engine composite fan blade is selected as a typical structural component to demonstrate the CSTEM capabilities. Results of various coupled multi-disciplinary heat transfer, structural, vibration, acoustic, and electromagnetic analyses for temperature distribution, stress and displacement response, deformed shape, vibration frequencies, mode shapes, acoustic noise, and electromagnetic reflection from the fan blade are discussed for their coupled effects in hot and humid environments. Collectively, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CSTEM code in capturing the coupled effects on the various responses of composite structures subjected to simultaneous multiple real-life loads
Dynamic Body VSLAM with Semantic Constraints
Image based reconstruction of urban environments is a challenging problem
that deals with optimization of large number of variables, and has several
sources of errors like the presence of dynamic objects. Since most large scale
approaches make the assumption of observing static scenes, dynamic objects are
relegated to the noise modeling section of such systems. This is an approach of
convenience since the RANSAC based framework used to compute most multiview
geometric quantities for static scenes naturally confine dynamic objects to the
class of outlier measurements. However, reconstructing dynamic objects along
with the static environment helps us get a complete picture of an urban
environment. Such understanding can then be used for important robotic tasks
like path planning for autonomous navigation, obstacle tracking and avoidance,
and other areas. In this paper, we propose a system for robust SLAM that works
in both static and dynamic environments. To overcome the challenge of dynamic
objects in the scene, we propose a new model to incorporate semantic
constraints into the reconstruction algorithm. While some of these constraints
are based on multi-layered dense CRFs trained over appearance as well as motion
cues, other proposed constraints can be expressed as additional terms in the
bundle adjustment optimization process that does iterative refinement of 3D
structure and camera / object motion trajectories. We show results on the
challenging KITTI urban dataset for accuracy of motion segmentation and
reconstruction of the trajectory and shape of moving objects relative to ground
truth. We are able to show average relative error reduction by a significant
amount for moving object trajectory reconstruction relative to state-of-the-art
methods like VISO 2, as well as standard bundle adjustment algorithms

Demonstration of capabilities of high temperature composites analyzer code HITCAN
The capabilities a high temperature composites analyzer code, HITCAN which predicts global structural and local stress-strain response of multilayered metal matrix composite structures, are demonstrated. The response can be determined both at the constituent (fiber, matrix, and interphase) and the structure level and includes the fabrication process effects. The thermo-mechanical properties of the constituents are considered to be nonlinearly dependent on several parameters including temperature, stress, and stress rate. The computational procedure employs an incremental iterative nonlinear approach utilizing a multifactor-interactive constituent material behavior model. Various features of the code are demonstrated through example problems for typical structures
Maintaining Acyclicity of Concurrent Graphs*
In this paper, we consider the problem of preserving acyclicity in a directed graph (for
shared memory architecture) that is concurrently being updated by threads adding/deleting
vertices and edges. To the best of our knowledge, no previous paper has presented a con-
current graph data structure. We implement the concurrent directed graph data-structure
as a concurrent adjacency list representation. We extend the lazy list implementation of
concurrent linked lists for maintaining concurrent adjacency lists. There exists a number of
graph applications which require the acyclic invariant in a directed graph. One such example
is Serialization Graph Testing Algorithm used in databases and transactional memory. We
present two concurrent algorithms for maintaining acyclicity in a concurrent graph: (i) Based
on obstruction-free snapshots (ii) Using wait-free reachability. We compare the performance
of these algorithms against the coarse-grained locking strategy, commonly used technique
for allowing concurrent updates. We present the speedup obtained by these algorithms over
sequential execution. As a future direction, we plan to extend this data structure for other
progress conditions
